The prose is lovely and effective, the characters are complex, and despite the fact that I am literally almost never taken off-guard by a reveal, I was on the edge of my seat to the very end and was genuinely stunned by some of the moving pieces here.

Catriona Ward has immediately become an auto-buy reader for me, no questions asked. I feel that this is one of those books where there is almost nothing I can say to explain why it’s so incredible - all I can say is that I am devastated, raw, shocked, and amazed. It’s rare that I see a book get this much hype and think it deserves every bit of it, but The Last House on Needless Street does, from start to finish. I’m absolutely reeling from how brilliantly crafted this book was. Thank you MacMillan Audio and Tor Nightfire for sending me a copy of The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward on audio to review, via NetGalley. In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three.Ī teenage girl who isn’t allowed outside, not after last time.Ī man who drinks alone in front of his TV, trying to ignore the gaps in his memory.Īnd a house cat who loves napping and reading the Bible.Īn unspeakable secret binds them together, but when a new neighbor moves in next door, what is buried out among the birch trees may come back to haunt them all. Trigger warnings: child abuse, animal abuse, kidnapping, neglect. You’ll think you have it figured out and then, SURPRISE🙃 I can’t say much else without giving away spoilers, but the twists and turns in this story were completely unexpected and truly horrifying. Plus, the nearby forest and the secrets it holds is more than enough to set the atmosphere of this book: it’s chilling. I’d also like to mention Ted’s house as well, because the descriptions of it are creepy as hell, and you all know how much I love a spooky house. And finally, Dee, Ted’s new neighbor, who is trying to find out who kidnapped her little sister when they were younger. Olivia, Ted’s cat, who narrates part of the book and is hilarious. Lauren, Ted’s young daughter who visits him occasionally. We have Ted, a lonely man who lives by himself in the house he grew up in.

The story has multiple points of view, and goes back and forth a bit between past and present. I don’t often give friends live play-by-play of my thoughts, but this time it was NECESSARY! I was a little hesitant listening to this one on audio, but friends, IT WAS INCREDIBLE!!! I kept messaging one of my friends while I was listening, telling her how creepy, eerie, twisted, and weird this book was. Does that count as an Official Review™️? Because if not I don’t really know what else to say😅 The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward went above and beyond all of my expectations.
